LOTS OF NEW FACES AND STAR POWER IN 1-3A DI FOR 2017….

Ok. Let’s catch up to speed in District 1-3A DI….Shallowater has a new coach, Bryan Wood, who came out of the AD position at Randall. Coach Bryan Welps left Brownfield to take the head coaching job at River Road, Littlefield starts a new era under their new head coach, Brent Green and Muleshoe has coach David Wood at the helm but former Offensive Coordinator Wes Wood left to Grandview with Butch Davis…Wow!!! Slaton and Friona have the same  head coaches and are hoping to improve on seasons where both teams missed the playoffs last season.

How will these teams shake out this fall? who was the upper edge, and which two teams are going to miss the playoffs? Here is my preview and predictions for these teams this season, which is looking like a great one for this district

SHALLOWATER MUSTANGS:

Players to watch: Brody Hendrick, Koby Wood, Cutter Sparks, Braxton Jurado

For Shallowater, my question is this: Was their 2-9 season in 2017 an anomaly, or was it a sign of things to come for Shallowater? Once the Mustangs hired Bryan Wood, the answer was already set in stone because Wood is one of the best coaches in West Texas and we will all see the results immediately. I wouldn’t be surprised if Shallowater goes 8-3 this season and wins District 1-3A DI. If they happen to finish second they still should be in prime position to make a run in the playoffs as well. Brody should have a bigger impact this season and Cutter Sparks will have a year of Varsity experience under his belt. Add Koby Wood to the mix with Braxton Jurado and Shallowater should be right back to their winning ways quickly.

MULESHOE MULES:

Players to watch: Isaac Mendoza, Michael Lozano, Yoel Reyes, Romeo Reyes

Muleshoe has David Wood back to lead his Mules’, but loses their high-powered Offensive Coordinator, Wes Wood, to Grandview. What can we expect with Muleshoe now with new coaches on both sides of the ball? My guess; it’s back to running the ball and playing defense now for the ‘Shoe. They can do that well, especially with emergence of Isaac Mendoza as a special two-way player at Linebacker and Receiver! Will their tailbacks hold up this season with another tough schedule coming? I got a feeling the Mules are about to make some serious noise..Nothing new for Coach Wood and his teams anyway since they are always competitive and dangerous.

LITTLEFIELD WILDCATS:

Players to watch: Chris Douglas, Matthew Arce, Gannen Braddock, Antwon Griggs

The Wildcats have a chance to really do something special this year if their youngsters step up this fall. It’s also going to be a new feel this season with Coach Huseman retiring and his son leaving the staff as well. Can coach Green step right in continue the Wildcat tradition for Littlefield? They have the best back in the district in Chris Douglas and the best lineman in the district as well in All-State returnee, Matthew Arce. Sometimes being young benefits your team, and I think this will be the year the ‘Cats surprise some people in the playoffs!

RIVER ROAD WILDCATS:

Players to watch: Hunter Mitchell, Zach Flick, Calem Smith, Brayden Pond.

River Road only has one returning starter on offense and four coming back on defense. What can we expect from the Wildcats this fall as they have enlisted Bryan Welps to take over as Head Coach/AD? This may be a rebuilding year for River Road, but they can still get into the postseason as long as they continually improve from week-to-week. I have faith in Coach Welps as he is a hell of a coach, I just don’t if this is the year it turns around for his squad because they don’t have many leaders returning.
