District 1-4A DI was easily one of the best in the 806 last year with three dominant teams in Levelland, who won the district, Estacado, and Pampa with Borger bringing up the rear. This fall, those same three teams will battle it out for first place and seeding as the Harvesters, Lobos and Matadors will all win their first round playoff games easily. Can Borger close the gap on the other three teams as it looks like once they’ll square off against Andrews in the first round of the postseason? Here is my scouting report on all four teams this season as well as players to watch for.
DISTRICT 1-4A DI DAVE CAMPBELL’S PREDICTIONS:
806’S PREDICTIONS: (ANY OF THE TOP 3 CAN FINISH IN EITHER POSITION)
1-4A DI SCOUTING REPORT:
#1 ESTACADO MATADORS: HEAD COACH: MARCUS SHAVERS
RETURNING STARTERS: 14 LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 8-4
PLAYERS TO WATCH: BO SIMS, SETH PORTER, ROYCE WELLINGTON, DEVIN WHITE, BILLY FRANCIS, MALACHI PEPPERS, DONALD YOUNG
Estacado can really make a run this season if their defense, particularly their back-end improves from last year’s good effort. A tough non-district schedule should benefit the Matadors when they face off against Pampa and Levelland and eventually Decatur or Stephenville. Quarterback Bo Sims is the man and should have a breakout season under Coach Boone’s tutelage. Don’t be surprised if the Matadors make some major noise in the playoffs and shock some people.
#2 PAMPA HARVESTERS: HEAD COACH: GREG POYNOR
RETURNING STARTERS: 12 LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 6-6
PLAYERS TO WATCH: BRANDON STEWARD, DARRELL FIELDS, BRADY PORTER, JACOBE MILLS
Now, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Harvesters win the district either with the best quarterback in the district in Brandon Steward, who threw for 4,008 yards and 41 touchdowns in his Junior season. Darrell Fields has four Division One offers already and will garner more as he will get most of the looks next season with the departure of Woelfe and Thomas. Brady Porter had 178 tackles last year for Pampa and will be the leader for a young defense. Can Pampa cut down on their turnovers? If they can, they can hang with anyone in the district…and in 4A…
#3 LEVELLAND LOBOS HEAD COACH: CURTIS LOWERY:
RETURNING STARTERS: 10 LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 10-4
PLAYERS TO WATCH: CHRIS GERBER, ZACH ESTRADA, CHRIS PEREZ,
Levelland has a new coach after Coach Sanderson went on to Midland Greenwood, and their defensive Coordinator, Brian Coker, is now the Head Coach at Borger. Chris Gerber is back with his 1,384 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns last year as well as Zach Estrada who caught 82 receptions for 1,261 yards and 15 touchdowns too. Chris Perez will anchor the defense that gradated a plethora of talented players like Daniel Hurn and Braden Price. What will their offense look like this year with the departure of one of the best Texas High School quarterbacks in history in Nick Gerber, who is on to Tyler Junior College? Their Quarterback and Secondary play will determine if they finish third, or challenge Pampa or Estacado for the district title.
#4 BORER BULLDOGS HEAD COACH: BRIAN COKER
RETURNING STARTERS: 14 LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 1-8-1
PLAYERS TO WATCH: MARLON JONES, LORENZO VALDEZ, JOSH JOHNSON, JEMARIUS GRIMES
Coach Brian Coker has his first job as the Bulldogs’ Head Coach. With fourteen starters back, there should be some familiarity for Borger especially at the tailback position where Marlon Jones returns with his 7 yards per-carry average from last season. The secondary will be a position of concern for the Bulldogs, but they have ten games to fix any issues and get ready for Andrews in the Bi-district round. Hoping for the best for Borger this season!
