MARK ADAMS….OUR 2016-17 806 STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR… “LIONHEARTED”

Let’s start this story off by mentioning Mark Adams in 5’5″ and weighs 145 pounds…

What a year for Mark….Wait…What a career for Mark Adams from New Deal High School! His Sophomore and Junior seasons he competed and contributed to the Lions’ success on the football field, and on the track where the Lions won 2A state titles the previous two years. This season as I went to go visit the Lions at two-a-days in August, I saw Mark at his regular position of wide receiver where he caught 31 passes for 784 yards and nine touchdowns in 2015. But, forced into the running back position after a few injuries to New Deal’s tailbacks, Adams exploded.

Mark rushed for 2163 yards and 25 touchdowns on the ground, while averaging nine yards a carry in the process! He also caught 28 receptions for 412 yards and eight more scores as well. He totaled 2575 yards and 33 touchdowns in one season. Folks, most athletes won’t get that in any career, much less 12 games. Then came track, the sport where Mark has been counted on to be the leader as all of his previous teammates graduated with some of those runners, like Sebastian Hartless, going on to DI schools. He pulled his hamstring and still hasn’t been full-strength all year. Despite the pain, Mark still qualified for three events at the 2A state track meet taking place this Saturday in Austin. I asked Mark what it took to get there, how it happened, who to thank, and how it felt to be named the 806 student-athlete of the year. Here is our interview below!

1. Athlete of the year, What does that mean to you?

MARK ADAMS, NEW DEAL LIONS

It means I’ve shown people my potential and ability to go out in every sport I participated in and put everything into every sport I played and made people realize that anything is achievable and I held nothing back this year!

2. 806 HSSC: JASON PEARSON

You were slotted to play wide receiver, ended up at running back and rushed for 2,100 yards and 33 total touchdowns.. How did that happen?

MARK ADAMS, NEW DEAL LIONS

Well when Jett Whitfield got hurt we looked around and thought to ourself like we need Jett; that’s our go to guy and we need the ball in his hands. Then a few days later coach calls up a play and it happened to be me getting the pop play which puts me in motion and the QB hands me the ball. So after they ran that play they said,” Hey let’s see how he looks running the ball from the back field.” After that practice, Coach Carver gave me that look and as I found you a new spot to play! The first few games I was so nervous all I could think about is the hits I was about to take this year but, in the end, I wanted to make my team happy and shock some faces when I stepped out on to the field! And I couldn’t have done it without my coaches who believed in me and gave me that shot!

Let’s move to Track.. How does it feel to qualify for state three years in a row. Better yet, how does it feel to have a chance at winning the state title three years in a row?!?

MARK ADAMS, NEW DEAL LIONS

It’s an unbelievable feeling! Great teammates to back me up and help make that chance possible because we all worked so hard to get to this point and we would like to make history for Deal!

With a new cast of characters surrounding you, what had to change for you guys to get here again?

MARK ADAMS, NEW DEAL LIONS

That took a lot of practicing handoffs and running a little extra because this is probably a young group and a few guys it took some getting use to and adjusting to the way we did practice! Also, Coach Carver has a big role in this because at the beginning of the year people were hurt so he threw in some guys he’d know be best fit for the relays and we are still adjusting who is the best fit for certain legs on the relay! The main thing that was needed to change was injuries; we had to keep everyone healthy!

This year’s championship attempt will be the toughest as Crawford has stepped up as a serious contender. What needs to happen in order for you guys to win this title?

MARK ADAMS, NEW DEAL LIONS

Come to practice everyday and take it as if we were racing at the state meet. Give it everything we have and make our teammates compete with each other. Make each other better each day we are given because we don’t have a very long time until we see them at the state meet!

So what would you tell Coach Carver and Coach Hill as your final thank you for what they have done for you in your career?

MARK ADAMS, NEW DEAL LIONS

I would say Coach Hill thank you for making me apart of your brand and believing in me and letting me be apart of the best experience as a New Deal Lion and making me part of something you could always hope for in a football program! And Coach Carver, thanks for bringing out all the potential in me and not only being here like a coach, but also giving me the father figure role that I’ve needed and also showing me sports and life resemblance! And thank you for putting time in for me out of sports and your commitments, I thank you! Just making me humble and unselfishness and passion for goals and achievements by giving me the boost and confidence to complete and achieve goals I’ve never thought about reaching! Thank you coaches, you gave me one hell of a high school career!

MARK ADAMS PERSEVERED AND NOW GOES FOR GOLD, AGAIN..

7. 806 HSSC: JASON PEARSON

Describe the support New Deal has given to you over the last few years. Also.. aren’t you injured? How is it playing and running at less than 100 percent?

MARK ADAMS, NEW DEAL LIONS

New deal has helped me though a lot thought my four years of high school and that’s on and off the field, in the class, and in life in general. They have helped me in every way they can. You know I don’t like putting it out there and saying this is why I can’t run 100 percent I go and make the best out of it regardless if I wasn’t 100 percent, I still will give it all I can give but I haven’t been hurt and I finally got better at the start of district so I’m 100 percent ready!

8. 806 HSSC: JASON PEARSON

For kids that are at small schools and have aspirations to accomplish what you have in their careers, what’s your advice to those youngsters??

MARK ADAMS, NEW DEAL LIONS

Don’t let anyone bring you down and tell you that you aren’t able to do things you want to achieve! Believe in yourself and work harder each day and if you have to question yourself, you didn’t give it your all! Play with heart and stay humble.

Congratulations, Mark. I’m proud of you…
